Most writers don't and most writers are poor.
Meanwhile, there are a whole bunch of folks getting rich from Internet activities. Hang around with them for a while and you'll hear one frequent gripe. They wish they could write! Even the ones who can write say they wish they had time to write more or they wish they could write better!
That's because the Internet is a content-burning machine. You could write all day and all night every day for 100 years and not begin to make a dent in the Internet's capacity to use up words.
I am a writer. I was already a writer before there was an Intetnet. What I was not was a wealthy writer. That's because the writing business was set up mainly so that publishers (book publishers, magazine publishers, and newspaper publishers) took all the risk and made the profit. It was a risky business, but the money side of it was always in publishing. Writers were hired for copy (that's what it was called before it became content) and you pretty much worked project to project. It was a tough life. Even writers who broke into print and got published regularly never made much money.
The Internet changed everything because first of all, it took the risk out of publishing.
Let's think back to ancient publishing. A publisher had to hire writers, photographers, designers, and the whole bit to produce a magazine or newspaper or book. Then he or she had to pay to print the thing and deal with the hassles of distribution. That involved a lot of upfront money before the first piece was ever even printed!
How did the publishers make money? Book publishers made money from the price tags, in other words, they got readers to pay for the privilege of reading. Perioidcal publishers practically give their products away but make money with advertising.
Today, you can be a publisher. There's no staff to line up, no designers to hire, no cameras to buy, no printers to talk to. And the good news is that you can still make money. How? You can charge for what you write (membership sites, e-books, online courses) or you can give it away and make money with advertising.
What this means for writers is the best news ever. You can now get in on the money end of this business...you can self-publish but not in the old-fashioned vanity press way. You can open up a publishing company that is just as valid and recognizable as any business venture. You can start writing.
No more rejection slips! No more having to edit something to the dumb it down or take the edge off. You just write. Then you publish.
You can charge for what you're doing or you can take in advertising bucks. Or you can do both. You can even add some products to your business (like newsstands that sell coffee).
The beauty of this for writers is that we're competing with guys who know more about the Internet than we do, but who can't or don't write. So what do they do? They either limp along (and you've probably seen some of their website writing) or they hire writers. But guess what? These guys are cheap. So they hire writers who'll write 200 articles for something like $500. That's even worse.
Writers are in the best position of anybody to make money using Internet publishing. Now remember, I said that the guys making money on the Internet know more than we do ... about the Internet. We know more than they do about writing. Not only that, if you're a working writer, you probably write quickly and well. E-books, reports, articles, no problem for you. You can crank out content!
The great news is that writing is hard to teach. Becoming a decent, competent writer is something I would not try to teach anyone.
Now these guys making money know more about the Internet than you do. That's true. But guess what? You can learn about the Internet. So uncork the champagne and get ready for the best years of your life!
